Sauna Near Provo: Utah’s Only Outdoor State Park Sauna
Utah Valley has seen a wave of sauna and cold plunge facilities open in recent years. From dedicated bathhouses to gym-adjacent recovery studios, there are more options than ever for people looking to experience contrast therapy in the Provo-Orem area. Most of these are indoor facilities — well-designed spaces that deliver the physiological benefits of heat and cold exposure in a controlled commercial setting.
Utah Lake Sauna is something different. It’s a traditional Nordic sauna built outdoors, on the shores of Utah Lake, inside Utah Lake State Park. No walls around the cold plunge. No ceiling over the recovery deck. The views are of the lake, the mountains, and the sky — not of a parking lot through a window.
Why an Outdoor Sauna in a State Park
The Finnish sauna tradition didn’t originate in commercial buildings. Saunas were built at the edge of lakes, on riverbanks, in forests. The point was to immerse yourself in heat and then step directly into nature for the cold phase. The natural environment wasn’t just scenery — it was part of the practice.
Utah Lake Sauna was designed with that tradition in mind. The sauna is a handcrafted cedar structure with a Himalayan salt wall, positioned for direct views of the lake. After heating up, you step outside to a cold plunge kept between 38–44°F, an outdoor shower, and Adirondack chairs on the deck. The whole experience happens in open air, surrounded by the state park.
State Park Saunas operates three locations at Utah state parks: Willard Bay State Park near Ogden, Wasatch Mountain State Park in Midway, and Utah Lake State Park near Provo. Each one is fully automated — you book online, receive an access code, and let yourself in. No front desk, no staff hovering. Just you and the sauna.
Location & Getting Here
Utah Lake Sauna is located at Utah Lake State Park, just to the left of the Visitor’s Center. The park is about 10 minutes from downtown Provo, 15 minutes from Orem, and 20 minutes from Lehi or Spanish Fork.
From Provo: Head west on Center Street toward Utah Lake. Follow signs for Utah Lake State Park. The sauna is just past the Visitor’s Center on your left.
From Orem/Vineyard: Take Geneva Road south toward Provo, then follow signs for Utah Lake State Park.
From I-15: Take exit 265 (Center Street/Provo) and head west. The park entrance is approximately 4 miles from the freeway.
A valid Utah State Parks day-use pass or annual park pass is required for entry. We recommend using Google Maps for navigation to the sauna, as Apple Maps occasionally routes to the wrong entrance.
What’s Included in Your Session
Every session at Utah Lake Sauna is 75 minutes and includes access to the full facility: the cedar sauna heated to 170–190°F with traditional Finnish sauna stones for löyly (steam), an outdoor cold plunge, an outdoor shower, Adirondack chairs on the lakeside deck, and a shelf stocked with essential oils, reading materials, and card games.
Community sessions accommodate up to 8 guests at $36 per person. Private buyouts are available for groups, couples, or anyone who wants the space to themselves — contact hello@utahlakesauna.com for private booking options.
Open Daily, Year-Round
The sauna is open every day from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM, including weekends and holidays. Sauna sessions are available in all seasons. Winter is peak sauna season — the contrast between the cold air, the hot sauna, and the cold plunge is at its most intense. But summer sessions offer their own appeal: the lake views, the sunsets, and the relaxation after a day of hiking, paddleboarding, or spending time at the park.
